[ 2011 Fentress Global Challenge 안내 ]

Fentress Architects is excited to release their first-ever Global Challenge to architecture and engineering students everywhere, asking how they, the students, imagine the airport of the future. Continually pushing the forefront of airport design, Fentress’ portfolio includes regional and internationally-acclaimed terminals such as Denver International Airport(Best Airport in North America, Business Traveler Readers’ Survey, Denver International Airport Passenger Terminal Complex, 2008), Incheon International Airport in South Korea (Best Airport Worldwide, Airports Council International, Incheon International Airport, 2005-2010), and San Jose International Airport (World’s Most Technologically Advanced Airport, Airport Improvement Magazine, 2010), among others. Currently, the studio is designing the Los Angeles International Airport Modernization Project.

Airport Design: A History of Transformation |  Beginning as a simple grassy strip called a “flying field,” to the 1960s “mystique” of air travel and romantic architecture, to the uninspiring “people processors” of the 1980s, airport architecture has transformed over time, the most recent and obvious change resulting in increased security regulations after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Overall, in the last 15 years, airports have experienced a resurgence of inspired design. Beautiful terminals with high-end retail and amenities make a traveler’s layover more pleasant and allow airlines to keep ticket costs down. Globalization is rapidly expanding the need for new airports and airport cities. Today, the aviation industry plays an integral role in the global economy with 2.4 billion passengers, 43 million tons of freight, supporting 32 million jobs and US$3.5 trillion in economic activity annually across the globe. By 2050, it is estimated that 16 billion passengers and 400 million tons of freight will be flown each year.

These future airports will be the cornerstones of tomorrow’s economy, shaping emerging regions in the same way that cities of the past were shaped by their access to seaports and railways.

2011 Fentress Global Challenge | What is the future of airport design?  How will the Airport of the Future look and function?  The 2011 Fentress Global Challenge invites you to answer these questions through design.

Evaluated in areas such as Creative Approach, Response to Site, Sustainability and Functionality, winning students will earn $10,000, which includes $3,000 cash and a paid internship at Fentress Architects during the summer of 2012. The student’s winning design will also gain international exposure by being featured in a traveling museum exhibit.
