고려대학교 건축학과는 1963년 12월 이공대학 공학부 내에 건축공학과로 설립되었고, 이듬해 제1회 신입생이 입학하였다. 1968년에는 학과 제1회 졸업생이 배출되었으며 1970년 1월에는 건축공학과 대학원이 설립된다. 1972년 2월에는 대학원 제1회 졸업생이 배출되었다. 1973년 3월에는 신입생을 학과 구별 없이 공과대학 계열로 모집하는 입학제도로 변경되어 이후 7년간 유지되었으며 1977년에는 이공대학이 이과대학과 공과대학으로 분리 개편된다. 1981년과 1982년 건축사 연구실, 도시설계 및 주택단지 연구실을 연차적으로 개설하고 교육의 내실을 도모함으로써 전문인력 양성에 크게 이바지하였다. 1984년에는 창립 20주년을 맞이하여 본 학과는 건축계 각 분야에서 선도적인 활동을 하는 모든 교우가 참석한 기념행사를 개최하고 ‘건축공학과 요람’을 발간하였다.
그 간의 계열별 입학제도는 1983년에 과별 모집의 원래 형태로 복귀된다. 이로써 건축과는 매년 공과대학 내에서도 가장 우수한 학생들을 선발하게 되었다. 1993년에 60명으로 증원된 학부생은 학과 설립 30주년을 맞는 1994년에는 다시 70명으로 증가하였다. 1994년에는 공과대학에서 착공한 테크노콤플렉스(공학관+산학관)가 1996년에 완공되며 학과의 연구실 및 실험실이 대폭 확충됨으로써 시설 적인 측면에서 내실화를 마련할 수 있었다. 이를 기점으로 학과 설립 이후 사용해온 제2공학관에서 공학관으로 이주하여 지금의 ‘공학관’ 시대를 맞이했다.
본 학과는 2003년도 입학생부터 교육 프로그램을 5년제 건축학전공과 4년제 건축공학전공으로 분리하였다. 건축학전공은 5년제의 전문학위(B.Arch) 과정으로서 국제기준에 맞는 건축가 양성 프로그램으로 개편되었고, 4년제의 건축공학전공은 공학교육 인증기준에 맞는 건축기술인 양성 프로그램으로(B.S. in Architectural Engineering) 개편되었다. 이후 2007년 1학기를 기점으로 건축학과 건축공학은 완전 분리를 단행하였다. 또한, 2009학년도에는 신입생이 ‘건축사회환경공학부’로 입학하여 2학년 진입 시 학과를 결정하던 학부제 시스템에서 입학 시부터 ‘건축학과(5년제)’로 분리 모집되는 시스템으로 바뀌었다. 이로써 전문성을 갖춘 건축학 교육 5년제 프로그램이 탄탄히 구축되었다. 2003년 이래 다져온 5년제 교육 프로그램은 2011년 11월 한국건축교육학인증원의 실사를 거쳐 5년 인증을 받았고 현재 지속적으로 인증된 프로그램으로 운영중이다.
현재, 고려대학교 건축학과는 건축학교육의 5년제 인증프로그램과 건축설계 및 계획, 도시설계, 역사, 이론, 친환경 등 다양한 분야에서 우수한 업적을 갖춘 교수진을 갖추며 ‘제2 창건’의 정신을 가지고 미래를 향해 힘차게 매진하고 있다. 이러한 분위기는 여러 해외 대학들과의 국제워크숍(대만, 밀라노, 동경), 공동학위제(와세다대학, 밀라노공대) 등의 국제화된 프로그램으로도 표출되고 있으며, 그 성과는 2013년도 BK21Plus사업 선정(인문 융복합 ‘도시재생’) 및 중앙일보 대학평가 건축 분야 최고 등급(고려대 & 서울대) 선정 등으로 입증되었다. 또한, 2015년이후 최근 2020년에 이르기까지, QS 세계대학평가 건축 분야에 세계 51~100위권 대학으로 지속적으로 자리매김하며, 학과의 우수성이 국제적으로도 인정받고 있음을 보여주고 있다.
The Department of Architecture at Korea University was established as the Department of Architectural Engineering in the College of Engineering in December 1963, and the first freshmen entered the following year. In 1968, the first graduates of the department were produced, and in January 1970, the Graduate School of Architectural Engineering was established. In February 1972, the first graduates of the graduate school were produced. In March 1973, the admission system was changed that recruited new students to the College of Engineering without distinction of department, and it was maintained for 7 years. In 1977, the College of Science and Engineering was separated and reorganized into the College of Science and the College of Engineering. In 1981 and 1982, the architectural history lab and the urban design and housing complex lab were opened respectively and contributed greatly to the training of professional manpower through sound education. In 1984, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the department, we held a commemorative event attended by all alumni who are leaders in the field of architecture and published the ‘Department of Architectural Engineering Booklet’.
The department admission system was returned to the original form as the major admission system in 1983. As a result, the Department of Architecture selects the best students in the College of Engineering every year. The number of undergraduate students expanded to 60 in 1993 and even more increased to 70 in 1994, the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the department. The Technocomplex (Engineering Building + Industry-University Building), which started construction in 1994 by the College of Engineering, was completed in 1996, and the department's labs were greatly expanded, making it possible to improve the facilities substantially. With this as a milestone, we moved from the Engineering Building 2, which had been used since the establishment of the department, to the Engineering Building, and started the era of the present ‘Engineering Building’.
The department has divided the curriculum into five-year Architecture Major and four-year Architectural Engineering Major from the students admitted in 2003. The architecture major is a five-year professional degree (B.Arch) course which has been reorganized into an architect training program that meets the international standard, and the four-year Architectural Engineering Major has been reorganized as the architectural engineer training program that meets the engineering education certification standards (BS in Architectural Engineering). From the first semester of 2007, architecture major and architectural engineering major were completely separated. Moreover, in the 2009 academic year, from the 'Faculty of Architectural, Social and Environmental Engineering' that freshmen had to decide their major on the second year, it was changed to the ‘Architecture Major (5-year system)’ that the freshmen are enrolled at the admission. As a result, the five-year architecture study curriculum with expertise was firmly established. The 5-year curriculum program, which has been built since 2003, was certified for five years after undergoing due diligence by the Korea Accreditation Institute for Architectural Education in November 2011 and is currently being operated as a continuously accredited program.
Currently, the Department of Architecture at Korea University has a five-year certification program for architecture study and faculty with excellent achievements in various fields such as architectural design and planning, urban design, history, theory, and eco-friendliness, and working hard towards the future with the spirit of 'Second Founding'. This mood is also expressed in the internationalized programs such as international workshops with foreign universities (Taiwan, Milan, Tokyo) and joint degree programs (Waseda University, Milan Institute of Technology), and its achievements were proven as we were selected for the 2013 BK21Plus project (Humanities Convergence ‘Urban Regeneration’) and the highest grade in the architecture field by JoongAng Ilbo University Rankings (Korea University & Seoul National University). In addition, from 2015 to 2020, we have been positioned as one of the world’s top 51-100 universities in the field of architecture by QS World University Rankings, demonstrating that the excellence of the department is being recognized internationally.
